Scaling Up Renewable Energy for Sustainable Agriculture in Kiambu County

Agriculture remains the backbone of many rural communities in Kenya, but rising energy costs and climate change continue to challenge smallholder farmers. The Scaling Up Renewable Energy Technologies (SRET) Project is addressing these challenges by integrating clean energy solutions into dairy and horticulture value chains across Kiambu County. Implemented by ADS Kenya and ADS Mt. Kenya Region, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through Welthungerhilfe (WHH), the project empowers farmers to embrace renewable energy technologies that improve efficiency, reduce costs, and protect the environment. Working with 3,000 farmers in 100 producer groups across Githunguri, Limuru, and Kikuyu sub-counties, the project provides training, strengthens partnerships, improves access to finance, and promotes sustainable farming practices. By combining renewable energy with agriculture, SRET is helping farming families increase productivity, improve food and nutrition security, and build resilient livelihoods. The initiative demonstrates how clean energy can transform agri-food systems while creating lasting social, economic, and environmental benefits.
